Racing vs. race[edit source]

I just moved this to "race" because I thought the term should be more concise, and I think the title "racing" was just copied from Wikipedia's article title. However, while revising the article, I realized that Wikipedia's idea was probably that "race" refers to an instance of the activity while "racing" refers to the activity as a general concept or as an action of an individual. I think the two are synonymous enough that it doesn't matter which is the title though. Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 15:00, May 30, 2020 (UTC)

There is also the issue that while "race" as a word is ambiguous, "racing" is not. I myself thought it was about race as the categorization some people use, not about the competition. - Soranin (talk) 22:42, May 30, 2020 (UTC)
I'd say have it as "Racing" its more concise. V i l k a T h e W o l f (talk) 23:57, May 30, 2020 (UTC)
The problems with those two points is that, for one, article titles should never be inflected for the sole sake of disambiguation like back in the day when people would pluralize one article title if it shares the same title as something else. For another, "race" would be more concise right? o.O" It's shorter and is the base dictionary form, without inflection. Would you guys still want this article at "racing" after reading my counter-points here? Are there any other reasons? Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 04:06, May 31, 2020 (UTC)
Why not change Freerunning to Freerun then? Its also shorter, freerun is also in the dictionary. and Wikipedia has Freerunning but doesnt have a page on Freerun. "Race" isnt just the competitive event, thats what "racing" would refer it. Race can used to classify species (Humans included). V i l k a T h e W o l f (talk) 04:13, May 31, 2020 (UTC)
The reason why Freerunning isn't at "Freerun" is because titles should be nouns and "Freerun" is a verb. For the latter, as I said, article titles shouldn't be inflected (e.g. pluralized, made past tense, turned into a gerund, etc.) for the sole sake of disambiguating between two articles which share the same name. We also don't have a page on race in the human classification sense anyways. I'm guessing though that going back to what I said the first time, maybe a case can be made that a "race" refers only to an instance of an event and "racing" refers more broadly to the general activity, and so to move it to "racing" won't necessarily be out of disambiguation? Is too confusing? Sol Pacificus(Cyfiero) 04:19, May 31, 2020 (UTC)

I've just moved it back since I realized after opening this topic that my procedure was in the wrong order. I shouldn't have moved it without asking you guys first, and it doesn't seem like you guys would be in favor of the move. I think "racing" can be justified based on the reasoning I just gave immediately above. I just had wanted to see if there was a stronger argument that could be made for retaining it at "racing" if you guys really prefer that form. However, I would also like you guys to familiarize yourself more with our manual of style on article title conventions if you guys have the time for future reference. Personally, I hesitate between the two titles when I created the page. I choose racing to not leave any ambiguity on the matter of the article but you can change it.Francesco75 (talk) 06:37, May 31, 2020 (UTC)
