Suyab (碎葉, Mandarin: Suìyè), was an ancient city that was located along the Silk Road in an area known to the Chinese as the Western Regions.[1][2] The city sprang up in the 5th or 6th centuries as a trade hub for Sogdian merchants.[3] In the 8th century, it was situated within the borders of the Tang dynasty.[1]

Suyab was the birthplace of the renowned Chinese poet Li Bai. The city also had a strong presence of the Hidden Ones, whose deeds may have inspired Li to consider becoming a xiake before he chose to become a government official and a poet.[1]
