Zhang Yizhi
Zhang Yizhi (張易之; died 705) was a paramour of Empress Wu Zetian and a prominent member of of the Golden Turtles. Because he wished to leave behind offspring, he secretly fathered the future prime minister Yang Guozhong with a servant girl.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 705, Yizhi and most of the Golden Turtles were killed when the Shenlong Revolution overthrew Wu Zetian's short-lived Zhou dynasty and restored the Tang.[1]
However, the remaining Golden Turtles managed to survive in hiding and gradually re-infiltrate the government. Around fifty years later, Guozhong would become its leader and incite his rival An Lushan into rebellion against the Tang. The truth of Guozhong's parentage was divined by the Japanese Tang official Abe no Nakamaro at the height of this conflict when he investigated the Golden Turtles' origins.[1]
