The Sharqiyah bureau

The Sharqiyah bureau was a Hidden Ones bureau situated in the Sharqiyah region of Baghdad's southeastern Karkh district. In the 860s, it was briefly headed by the Master Assassin and Rafiq Fuladh Al Haami,[1] before he returned to the Harbiyah bureau.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

After Caliph al-Mutawakkil's death in 861,[3] the Alamut Hidden Ones installed multiple bureaus to fight and stomp out the Order of the Ancients' influence across the city.[1] Fuladh founded the bureau in Sharqiyah and found himself in contact with Ali ibn Muhammad to aid in his rebel efforts. However, tensions arose between the Zanj Rebellion and the Caliphate. While debating over a course of action, the Alamut Hidden One Basim ibn Ishaq arrived and learned that mercenaries had executed Ali's rebels publicly. Basim offered to find and kill the Order operatives responsible for the murders committed. Ali agreed and stated he would wait for him at the Sharqiyah Gate. Before Basim left, Fuladh warned him to work quickly.[4]

After spying on a meeting at the Officers' Club between two Order members,[5] Basim returned to the bureau and relayed his information to both Ali and Fuladh. Determining them to be General Jasoor ibn Basil and Admiral Nadir ibn Havid, Fuladh informed Basim of their locations before he left to assassinate them.[6] After finding and eliminating both Jasoor[7] and Nadir,[8] Basim returned to the bureau and talked with Fuladh and Ali about his discovery of them serving a general who was part of the Turkic Army. Fuladh determined that Al-Mardikhwar was the warlord Wasif al-Turki. Realizing the task ahead, Fuladh gave Basim a feather, assigned him to assassinate Wasif, and instructed him to make it look like Ali killed the warlord.[9]

After Basim assassinated Wasif,[10] he and Ali fought their way out of the Great Garrison and later arrived back at the bureau. Giving the feather back to Fuladh, Basim saw Ali again and gave his condolences on Beshi's death at the hands of Wasif. Ali accepted his support but stated that freedom has a price and how he would wish peace upon the Hidden Ones but knew better. Basim voiced his worries about Ali's rebellion to Fuladh before leaving to prepare for his next mission.[11]
