San Donato

San Donato is a commune in the outskirts of Milan, Italy.
History[edit | edit source]
In 2012, it was used as a simulated location by Abstergo Industries during the first and second stages of their Animi Training Program.[1][2]
The simulation depicted a small, quaint community set near a large fortification's walls that were built into the mountainside. At the village's center was a large building with a cloistered courtyard and a modest, two-story belltower protruding upwards at one corner. The dilapidated houses scattered around it betrayed signs of poverty, with buildings on the outskirts even having been wrecked. Looming high above the village was an imposing walled castle built atop a hill that flanked its periphery. A tiny church—no more than the size of a chapel—lay on one of the rises close to the promontory.[1]
The San Donato map, like most of the simulated locations in the first and second stage, had different variations that corresponded to varying times of day.[1]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
San Donato first featured as a playable map in the multiplayer of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (2010). On 11 May 2011, the game's developer Ubisoft issued a community challenge promising to release a night version of the map for free if the official Assasin's Creed Twitter page received 2,012 tweets containing the phrase "Bring on the Night". The Assasin's Creed playerbase achieved this within a week, and Ubisoft released the San Donato by night map.[3][4] San Donato subsequently returned in the multiplayer of Assassin's Creed: Revelations (2012) through the Mediterranean Traveler Map Pack downloadable content.
