The Royalists were a military faction of the English military who supported the monarchy against the Roundheads, who supported the English Parliament and its leader Oliver Cromwell, during the English Civil War.

After the death of King Charles I, the Royalists were led by King Charles II, Charles I's son, against Cromwell's troops in numerous conflicts. Unfortunately, they were defeated by Cromwell's numbers and ultimately lost the war, with their leader retreating into exile in France. However, the remaining Royalists in England challenged Cromwell's authority gradually and found an ally in General George Monck. After the death of Oliver Cromwell, General Monck took over London. From the chaos, Parliament offered King Charles II support in exchange for amnesty, to which he accepted. Despite losing the war, the Royalists won the fight to have King Charles II reinstalled as monarch of England.[1]
