The Roundheads were a military faction of the English military who supported the English Parliament and its leader Oliver Cromwell against the Royalists, who supported the monarchy, during the English Civil War.
History[edit | edit source]
After the death of King Charles I, the Roundheads faced off against the Royalists in multiple confrontations and proved to be victorious over them. After nine years of civl war, the Parliamentarians won the day while Charles I's son, King Charles II was exiled once again to France. However, the remaining Royalists in England began to undermine Cromwell's authority. Within seven years, Cromwell had died and General George Monck took over London. As a result, Parliament offered King Charles II their support in exchange for amnesty, to which he accepted, undoing the Roundheads' efforts of turning England into a democratic state.[1]
