Newfoundland
Newfoundland is an island off the east coast of the North American mainland which forms part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
History[edit | edit source]
Some time during the 970s, Leif Ericson was the first European to reach the shores of North America, in what is currently known as Newfoundland. Although it is not clear whether he was part of the initial voyage, he was certainly a member of the Vikings' expedition that reached L'Anse aux Meadows, a settlement on the island. According to Viking myths and sagas, Ericson established a colony at Vinland.[1]
In 1720, after his attack on a fleet of forty-two ships belonging to the Portuguese Empire's navy stationed in Brazil, Bartholomew Roberts renamed one of the captured ships The Fortune and headed north towards Newfoundland. He plundered a number of ships near the coasts of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland before returning to the West Indies in the winter.[2]
During the Seven Years' War, the island was considered more strategically important than the peninsula of Labrador, from which it is separated by a strait.[3]
