Minamoto no Yoshitsune (源 義経, c. 1159 – 1189), also known as Ushiwaka-maru (牛若丸) [1] in his childhood, was a Japanese commander from the Minamoto clan during the 12th century. He was considered one of the greatest warriors of his time and one of the most famous samurai in Japanese history, playing an important role during the Genpei War.[2]

Biography[edit | edit source]

During his lifetime, Yoshitsune fought a famous duel against the sōhei Benkei at Gojo Bridge, which he won. This led the warrior-monk to become his retainer and serve him during the Genpei War against the Taira clan, dying alongside one another in 1189.[2] Yoshitsune's duel with Benkei became well known and held in high regard, such that in the 16th century, the people of Ōtsu considered it legendary.[1]
