Mardonius (died 479 BCE), also known as Mardonios, was a Persian commander who served under Darius I of Persia during the Greco-Persian Wars.

During the Persian occupation of Athens, Mardonius visited a temple of Hera south of the city and had it burned down.[1]

Following the Persian defeat at the Battle of Salamis in 480 BCE, King Xerxes was greatly discouraged to continue his invasion of Greece. However, Mardonius convinced the King to resume the campaign. Mardonius combated the Greeks at the Battle of Plataia a year later, suffering a crushing defeat which resulted in his death and the end of the Persian invasion of Greece.[2]

After his death and defeat in the wars, Mardonius was featured on a stoa located in Sparta, Lakonia, Greece.[3]
