This article is about Temple of Hera in Attika. For other uses, see Temple of Hera.

The Burned Temple of Hera was a temple dedicated to the goddess Hera outside Athens, situated within the Phaleron Sandy Bay, east of the Phaleron Sunken Harbor in Attika, Greece.
History[edit | edit source]
During the Greco-Persian Wars, the temple was burned down by the Persian general Mardonius. After the war, rather than rebuilding the temple, Athenians replaced the statue of the goddess instead.[1]
By the Peloponnesian War, the temple ruins had been claimed by a group of Followers of Ares. The Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the ruins, eliminating the Followers and claiming their valuables.[2]
