Burned Temple of Hera

The Burned Temple of Hera was a temple dedicated to the goddess Hera outside Athens, situated within the Phaleron Sandy Bay, east of the Phaleron Sunken Harbor in Attika, Greece.

History

During the Greco-Persian Wars, the temple was burned down by the Persian general Mardonius. After the war, rather than rebuilding the temple, Athenians replaced the statue of the goddess instead.

By the Peloponnesian War, the temple ruins had been claimed by a group of Followers of Ares. The Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the ruins, eliminating the Followers and claiming their valuables.
