The Karkh bureau

The Karkh bureau was a Hidden One bureau situated in the Fief of Rayasanah region of Baghdad's western Karkh district. In the 860s, it was headed by the Hidden One blacksmith and Rafiq Rebekah.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

After Caliph Al-Mutawakkil's murder in 861 CE,[2] the Alamut Hidden Ones installed multiple bureaus from which to counter the Order of the Ancients' influence across the city. By instruction, Rebekah later set up a bureau in the Fief of Rayasanah. The Master Assassin Roshan later joined Rebekah in her investigations on the Order's presence in Karkh.[1]

Al-Hasan ibn Musa also joined the bureau as its engineer. At the bureau, both Rebekah and Roshan welcomed their fellow Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq and they discussed the corruption within The Bazaar and its exclusive auction, the Da'irat Al-mal. Believing their target would appear, Roshan asked Basim to follow her when he was ready to start. After talking with Rebekah, he later joined Roshan and left the bureau.[3]

After Basim assassinated the Order members Suhail[4] and Javed,[5] he met with Roshan and Rebekah at the bureau and he revealed that the Order leader to be a foreigner. After discussing the Order leader's ties to the caliph's soldiers, Rebekah suggested it may be the caliph's treasurer. Realizing there was no face or name to the target, Roshan left again and asked Basim to join her and ready himself for his mission.[6]

After determining the Treasurer to be a Chinese merchant named Ning and assassinating her,[7] Basim returned to the bureau to debrief and give his bloodied feather to Rebekah and Roshan. Worried, Roshan suggested that the Order was spreading their reach before speaking to Basim privately about his moment with his jinni. Reluctant, Basim stated his moment with his jinni was over before being told to rest. Ultimately, the Hidden Ones completed their objective by eliminating the Order's local influence.[8]
