John Hammon

John Hammon was a wealthy man during the Victorian era and a mutual friend of Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin.

Biography

Early life

Hammon was born into a wealthy family and was the only child of his father. He also became friends with both Charles Dickens and Charles Darwin.

Return to London

After Hammon's father passed away, he returned to London from South Africa to settle his affairs, as well as to meet his arranged bride, Bella Wilton. When he arrived in London, Dickens and Darwin asked the Frye twins to act as Hammon's escort, for they feared he would be robbed, given his "tremendous wealth and charming innocence".

One of the twins met Hammon at Waterloo station, where he expressed concern over marrying his fiancée, as they had never met and he was worried that she was marrying him only for the money. They were ambushed by a group of Blighters as they left the train station, though the Assassin dealt with them swiftly. Hammon then proposed a plan to see if Bella was genuine in her feelings: act as if the robbers had succeeded in killing him. Though skeptical, the Assassin did as asked, throwing one of the bodies into the Thames and driving Hammon to his fiancée's house to deliver the sad news. She was visibly distraught and Hammon fell in love with her.

Hammon later asked the Assassin for another favor, this time to stage a kidnapping of Bella so he could leap into action, "saving her life" and winning her heart. Reluctant, the Assassin agreed and did as asked. Though Bella suspected it was a ruse from the start, she went along with it and later left with Hammon to hear his explanations. They would soon marry, according to Dickens.
