Farah (died 860s) was a concubine who lived in Baghdad during the 9th century.

Biography

In the 860s, Farah was one of the concubines of the Caliph who frequented the Harem in the Round City. After the death of Caliph Al-Mutawakkil in 861, Farah and fellow concubine Nasrin soon began to talk with other concubines about the waning influence of Qabiha, the "Umm Walad" of the former caliph. Speaking as the new "Umm Walad," Farah took charge of the harem in Qabiha's absence.

One day, while ordering the harem's stewardess Makira to receive the new eunuchs, Farah continued her discussions about the change of caliphs and Qabiha's downfall. Unbeknownst to them, Farah and Nasrin were targeted by Makira, who remained loyal to Qabiha and could not stand their opposition. When the Alamut Hidden One Basim Ibn Ishaq infiltrated the harem by posing as one of the new eunuchs, Makira saw an opportunity to get rid of both of her rivals and tricked Basim into poisoning Farah and setting up Nasrin as the perpetrator.

After Basim pickpocketed Farah's flask from Nasrin, Makira secretly tainted the alochol inside with nightshade and had Basim return the flask to Nasrin without her noticing. When Nasrin later gave Farah her flask to drink from it, the latter immediately succumbed to the poison and died. Due to evidence planted in Nasrin's room, she was held responsible for the crime and seized by the guards while Makira watched as her plan succeeded.
