Lake Biwa (琵琶湖, Biwa-ko) is the largest lake in Japan, located in Shiga Prefecture near Kyoto. It is one of the oldest lakes in the world and an important source of water for the Kansai region.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In 1575, after the defeat of the Azai-Asakura alliance,[2] Akechi Mitsuhide was awarded Sakamoto Castle by his lord Oda Nobunaga. The castle itself was situated fairly close to the lake.[3]
In 1582, the kunoichi Fujibayashi Naoe and the former samurai of Nobunaga Yasuke explored the region surrounding the lake.[4]
