Future Technology is a division of Abstergo Industries focusing on technology research and development, supporting Abstergo's other divisions.[1]

Prior to his death in 2018, Dr. Álvaro Gramática served as its director while working on the Phoenix Project.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

Research of the Shroud of Eden[edit | edit source]

On 3 October 2011, at Future Technology's Mexico City branch, Isabelle Ardant came to give Álvaro Gramática the Shroud of Eden acquired by Abstergo during World War II. She tasked Gramática with fixing the Shroud. Excited at being able to both work on the artifact and knock down Warren Vidic, the scientist began work immediately.[3]

On 4 January 2012, Gramática called Ardant to Future Technology's Paris branch to continue his research. Having reached a dead end, Gramática's last resort was to shoot himself in the head while wearing the Shroud to see if it would activate. His hypothesis was proven correct as his wound was instantly healed while Consus spoke to Ardant through him.[4]

On 22 June, Ardant, fearing for Gramática's well-being, introduced him to Violet da Costa to help his research. Ardant left, while Gramática, eager to continue, instructed da Costa to wrap herself in the Shroud. Not waiting for her, Gramática shot her in the head, after which Consus possessed da Costa and spoke with Gramática. The scientist interviewed the Isu about the Shroud and Consus himself. However, after the damage to da Costa was healed, Consus went silent. Gramática then repeated the process to communicate with Consus again.[5]

On 12 December, the Eye-Abstergo satellite was scheduled to launch. After its launch was sabotaged by the Assassins, Gramática and da Costa said their farewells to each other and Consus. Donning the Shroud for what seemed like the last time, da Costa was again shot in the head by Gramática. Consus then conversed with the two, calling humans "marvelous creations", before sensing that Juno had escaped the Grand Temple. After a warning message, he went silent again.[6]

On 17 November 2013, Sigma Team leader Juhani Otso Berg broke into the Paris branch with da Costa to interrogate Consus. Da Costa attempted to spike Gramática's coffee with tranquillizers; however, he had such an immunity to them that it had no effect. Gramática entered his lab to see the two about to contact Consus via da Costa, but allowed them to continue. Berg then asked Consus about Juno and her followers to assess what threat they posed, but got only vague answers. Consus did, however, mention the Grey.[7]

Phoenix Project[edit | edit source]

Following the death of John Standish, Gramática analyzed his body and discovered a high concentration of Isu DNA. He subsequently decided to locate and collect DNA samples of other Sages, both past and present, in order to sequence a complete Isu genome.[8] This operation became known as the Phoenix Project and would serve as Gramática's primary focus over the next few years.[9]

In October 2014, the Assassins Gavin Banks and Galina Voronina led an attack on Future Technology's Paris branch, destroying the Phoenix Project samples and damaging the Shroud of Eden. Gramática was mortally wounded by a grenade thrown by Voronina and used the Shroud to heal himself, though this left the Shroud completely powerless, preventing the scientist from further communicating with Consus.[10]

Despite the major setback to the Phoenix Project, Gramática resolved to continue his work and relocated to a remote facility in Australia,[11] which only he knew the location of.[12] In 2015, following the Templars' retrieval of another Shroud of Eden from London, Violet da Costa delivered it to Gramática, who intended to use it to accelerate his research's progress.[13] Later, Juhani Otso Berg also brought a Precursor box to the scientist, who sent him the coordinates of his secret laboratory.[12]

In August 2018, after three years of research, Gramática finally succeeded in sequencing an Isu genome, just as the Instruments of the First Will led by da Costa arrived to seize control of the Australia facility.[14] Taking Gramática hostage, they forced him to use the Shroud and somatic cells extracted from the young Sage Elijah to construct an Isu body for Juno's consciousness to inhabit, allowing her to be resurrected in the physical world.[15] However, the Assassins and Berg, seeking to stop the Instruments, attacked the facility, with Charlotte de la Cruz killing Juno's host body. During the battle, Gramática was fatally crushed by fallen metal debris, leaving Future Technology without its director.[16]
