Colette (fl. 1790s) was an informant working for the Parisian Brotherhood of Assassins during the French Revolution.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Colette was recruited by the Café Théâtre's manager and Assassin Charlotte Gouze around 1791, who sent her to investigate Les Actes des Apôtres, a royalist group engaging in criminal activities across Paris. Colette, posing as a war orphan, became a scullery maid for Azelma and an innkeeper, two members of Les Actes des Apôtres. She discovered information on the group's leader, Renard, but she was compromised by Azelma, who ordered the innkeeper to kill Colette.[1]

Learning of Colette's plight, Gouze sent the Assassin Arno Dorian to save her and kill the innkeeper. With the innkeeper dead, Colette could resume her work.[1] Later, she discovered that Renard intended to sell the Sancy diamond, which had been stolen during a raid of the royal treasury. After she relayed this information to Gouze, Arno was sent to steal back the diamond and send it far away from France.[2]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Colette's name is a reference to Les Misérables, where a girl named Cosette worked as a servant for an innkeeper and his wife before the protagonist Jean Valjean saved her.
  • The name Colette, a diminutive of Nicolette, is ultimately derived from the Greek Νικολαος ('Nikolaos'), meaning "victory of the people".
