Takatsuki Castle was a castle in northern Takatsuki in Izumi Settsu, Japan.
History[edit | edit source]
In 1573, Takayama Tomoteru and his son Takayama Ukon became the lords of the castle. During their lordship, they worked on the development of the city and even supported the work of Christian missionaries. Having converted at the age of 12, Ukon commissioned a church and invited missionaries to visit and celebrate in religious festivities, such as the Jesuit priest Luís Fróis. This caught the attention of Oda Nobunaga, who requested a pledge of allegiance from Ukon and threatened retaliation if he refused; Ukon ultimately complied, pleasing Nobunaga.[1]
In late 1582, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke infiltrated the castle after learning of the location of Fujichika Nakayama, a samurai who had betrayed Nobunaga, from former Oda retainer Hori Hidemasa. Within the castle's tenshu, they found and assassinated Nakayama before recovering a bow, the Ill-Fated String, and a letter detailing his orders to betray Nobunaga.[2]
While there, Naoe and Yasuke also eliminated three samurai daisho,[3] recovered a painting from Kanō Eitoku's collection,[4] looted the Peasant Hat from the castle's treasure chest, and climbed atop the tenshu to survey the area.[3]
