Judge and Executioner was a virtual representation of one of Basim Ibn Ishaq's genetic memories relived through the Animus.[1]
Basim began his investigation on Governor Muhammad ibn Tahir.
Basim entered the Mazalim Courts.
- Basim: The Mazalim courts are close. Dervis once told me it is where the commons can appeal when justice itself is dealt unjustly. My father once said, to know the measure of a man, ask those who work beneath him. These judges must know the Governor better than most.
He made his way to the judge's office and spoke to him.
- Basim: Greetings, sayyidi (sir). I wonder if I could ask you some questions about the Governor, Muhammad ibn Tahir.
- 'Adil ibn Munsif: I am not underpaid to answer questions. I suggest you make this worth my time. Otherwise...
He motioned for Basim to leave.
- Basim: Would you accept this token of appreciation from a humble citizen?
- 'Adil ibn Munsif: Hmm. I would. As a start.
- Basim: I serve justice, not spoil it. Take your money.
Basim gave him another token.
- Basim: You drive a hard bargain. Too hard.
- 'Adil ibn Munsif: Wait. A rival has uncovered documents that could see me dragged before my own court. Bring them here and I'll answer your questions.
- Basim: I will see what I can do.
Basim left to retrieve the evidence, then reconsidered his action and returned to ibn Musif.
- 'Adil ibn Munsif: Still curious about the Governor?
(return to previous option)
- Basim: You drive a hard bargain. Too hard.
- 'Adil ibn Munsif: Well, as I had said, I am in need of certain documents...
- Basim: I will see what I can do.
Basim left to retrieve the evidence. He found an entrance to the rival judges' room from the second floor. Entering, he retrieved the evidence on a table.
- Basim: A little ill for a greater good. But it leaves a bad taste.
As he left, he overheared civilians in the court.
- Civilian: Abu 'Abdallah should be tried for treason. If her were in my court, why I... Well, it is better left unsaid.
Basim left the rival judge's office and returned to ibn Munsif.
- Basim: I have what you asked for.
- Basim: Let me think about it.
- 'Adil ibn Munsif: Wait. A rival has uncovered documents that could see me dragged before my own court. Bring them here, I'll answer your questions.
- Basim: I will see what I can do.
- Basim: I am, but your price is too steep.
- 'Adil ibn Munsif: Well, as I had said, I am in need of certain documents...
(return to first Bribe option)
- Basim: Now... what do you know about the Governor?
- 'Adil ibn Munsif: He's feared. Respected. Dedicated to the rule of law, order.
- Basim: That is all you know? You work here. Muhammad ibn Tahir keeps office at the courts!
- 'Adil ibn Munsif: At the Shurta Courts, not the Mazalim. He does keep spies here. One scuttles back to his office every day at noon. Goodbye now.
Basim left the office and waited at an outside bench until the messenger arrived.
- Basim: You are whom I seek. Lead, and I will follow.
I see you now. Come, lead me to what it is I truly seek.
There you are. Now lead on.
In his haste to pursue his target, he was detected.
- Basim: They are gone. Today, I was to hasty. Tomorrow, I must be better.
Tabban (Damn it), Basim. I got too close. I will have to try again tomorrow.
(tailing mission restarts)
Basim left the office and waited at an outside bench, discovering someone across who seemed to fit the description of a messenger.
- Basim: That messenger could lead me to the Governor's office... and whatever secrets he buries there.
Basim carefully followed the messenger from afar.
- Basim: There you are, just as I thought.
He followed the man as he navigated through the streets. Reaching a guarded gate, he used the rooftops to keep away.
- Messenger: Stay alert... something is amiss.
- Soldier: Yes, sayyidi (sir).
- Basim: Good. Now stay where I can see you, would you?
- Basim: Lost. I can almost here Roshan scolding me now. Perhaps I can redeem this failure tomorrow.
(tailing mission restarts)
- Basim: Not good enough. Tomorrow it is. And I must remain unseen.
(tailing mission restarts)
Basim followed the man to the Shurta Headquarters, outside of which a small gang of mercenaries lingered and murmured to each other about wanting to boldly attack the occupants. The messenger headed inside, unbothered by the ruffians at the doors.
- Basim: Dervis always warned me I would be dragged to the Shurta. Who would have imagined I would walk in willingly?
Basim found a balcony on the east side and entered the building on the rafters above the basement jails.
- Civilian 1: Poverty was my only crime! Free me from these chains! Please!
Basim dropped in and saw four men held in separate cells built into the walls.
- Elder: Sa'idni! (Help me!) I cannot bear this any longer.
Basim freed them from their cages. The prisoners promptly grabbed weapons and tried to fight their way out.
- Civilian 1: Alhamdulillah! (Thank God!)
- Basim: Fi amanillah, ya sadeeqi. (May God protect you, my friend.)
Amidst the chaos, he hid in a wardrobe. When the fighting stopped, the soldiers returned to their posts. Still hidden, he eavesdropped on two men.
- Soldier 1: Has the governor returned?
- Soldier 2: I am not sure. I did not see him go upstairs.
Basim made his way upstairs and proceeded along the corridor, hearing conversations on the other side of the room of the first floor.
- Soldier 3: It's been mad in the streets today. If it's not Abu 'Abdallah's thugs sowing chaos, it's the damn rebels!
- Soldier 4: It's all we can do to keep riots from breaking out. The Governor has a plan. He will see us through this storm.
Basim recovered the key to the governor's from one of the soldiers. He read on a note on the table.
For the Governor's Eyes Only
- Some still clamor for the claim of Abu ‘Abdallah. They are not many, but they are loud and determined to drown out any voice of reason. It seems that every time the outcry ebbs and the dust threatens to settle, an unseen hand rakes itself through the dirt, clouding our sight and prompting fresh outrage. Whose hand I cannot guess, but I would stay it and staunch this chaos.
He returned to the office door and unlocked it, gaining him access. He proceeded inside to yet another room.
- Basim: Muhammad ibn Tahir's office, at last.
He read a note on a stool in the corner.
Resignation of Abu 'Abdallah
- With a heavy heart, I, Abu 'Abdallah, swear allegiance to our Caliph regnant and avow that I will not seek the throne while he is living.
Signed 11 Shawwal.
- Basim: Abu 'Abdallah swears allegiance to the Caliph, and that he will not seek the throne himself...
He read a copy of Arib Al-Ma'muniyya's work on a nearby cabinet.
"Ocean, Desert, Cobra, Dove"
- Rage as the Ocean,
I'll sweeten your storms;
Scorch as the desert,
I'll bathe in your heat;
Strike as the cobra,
but plunge in my breast;
Soar as the dove,
but alight in my nest;
Where you go, there I'll go;
Where you rest, there I'll rest.
- Basim: "Ocean, Desert, Cobra, Dove." It seems he is an admirer of Arib the Poet.
He read a letter on the main table.
Letter from the Tahirids
- Cousin, per your request all terms with Alamut are hereby voided; our pledge of protection revoked; our offer of asylum rescinded.
Abdallah ibn Tahir
He discovered a map on Alamut on a desk.
- Basim: A man who puppets the powerful, who seeks to purge the Hidden Ones at Alamut... I have seen enough.
Just as he finished his investigation, the governor Muhammad ibn Tahir entered the office and spotted Basim.
- Muhammad: You can tell your masters I've had copies made. Shred that page, slit my throat, our bargain stands.
- Basim: My masters?
- Muhammad: The masked cabal, the Order of... I don't care. Are you not in their service?
- Basim: Are you not in their service?
- Muhammad: I serve the Caliphate. I serve Allah. And I do it without hiding my face. Now, if you'll excuse me.
- Basim: Why were you giving commands to Wasif al-Turki? A member of the Order?
- Muhammad: The brute was stoking the fire of a thousand rebellions. Thankfully someone spared me the trouble of putting him down. A Hidden One, I heard. Are you the one to thank?
- Basim: I read your letters. You forced your cousins to remove their protection from Alamut. You sold us out to our enemies!
- Muhammad: And brought peace to Baghdad. You've already helped yourself to the receipt.
- Basim: Abu 'Abdallah's Oath of Allegiance? What does he have to do with anything?
Basim drew his Hidden Blade.
- Muhammad: His ambition would have torn the Caliphate apart. I offered the Order Alamut, they gave me assurance he'd threaten us no more.
- Basim: So to trap a fox you loose a wolf? The Order will see Baghdad burn, Governor! History will judge you for this.
- Muhammad: History can hang me for it! I'll leave this world knowing that there is courage in compromise!
Basim drew his Hidden Blade near the governor's neck.
- Basim: There is also cowardice!
- Muhammad: How old are you? Twenty? I was your age when I came to this city. Righteous beyond reproach.
- Basim: What happened?
- Muhammad: I grew up. If you really wish to spare Alamut, turn that blade on your enemies.
Basim withdrew his Hidden Blade.
- Basim: Give me their name. The one you brokered the deal with.
- Muhammad: I could. But if you fail, then I die... and I'd prefer not to. Now, I have things to do. No hard feelings.
The governor left his office and immediately called for the guards.
The alarm was sounded, leaving the place on high alert.
- Basim: So the day ends with me fleeing the Shurta after all.
Guards entered the governor's office.
- Soldier: Quick, to the Governor!
Basim fled the Shurta Headquarters and reflected on what he found on the governor.
- Basim: Order or no, Governor Muhammad is no friend to the Hidden Ones.
Basim uncovered Muhammad's dealings with the Order by having sold out the Alamut Hidden Ones' location for peace in Baghdad.
