al-Musta'in
Abū al-'Abbās Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad (c. 836 – 866), known by his regnal name al-Musta'īn, was the twelfth caliph of the Abbasid Caliphate from 862 to 866. He was a nephew of the tenth caliph, al-Mutawakkil.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
Al-Musta'in was known for his reign during the Anarchy at Samarra, a succession crisis[1] sparked by al-Mutawakkil's accidental murder at the hands of the thief Basim ibn Ishaq.[2] With al-Mutawakkil's son and successor al-Muntasir dying without an heir, the Turkic military leaders met and elected al-Musta'in as caliph over al-Mutawakkil's other son, Abu 'Abdallah.[1]
When Abu 'Abdallah decried this as usurpation, since he had already chosen his own regnal name in anticipation of being crowned,[3] al-Musta'in placed him under house arrest to stop him from gaining civilian support. However, this had the inverse affect as it instigated another civil war for control of the Caliphate, echoing the Fourth Fitna from a generation earlier between caliph al-Amin and prince al-Ma'mun.[4]
