Hilde
Hilde was a Norse woman who lived during the 9th century. She was the sister of Olav and served as the taskmaster for Gorm Kjotvesson in Vinland.
Biography[edit | edit source]
When the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan traveled with Nessa to Vinland in order to search for Gorm, she met Hilde on the shores of Nyhofn. Lying about her reason for coming to Vinland and adopting the alias "Jora of Jorvik", Eivor learned about Olav the Unlucky's disappearance from a conversation between Hilde and another resident of the Norse settlement.[1]
After assassinating Gorm,[2] Eivor returned to Nyhofn together with Olav and learned that Hilde was his sister when she saw the siblings embrace. Eivor then revealed her true identity to Hilde and the nature of her conflict with Gorm.[3]
Although Hilde was happy to hear the news of Gorm's death, since it meant that her brother no longer had to live in hiding, she also remarked that, without Gorm, she had no reason to stay in Vinland anymore since there was no one left to pay her for her work. She thus decided to sail back to England, inviting both Eivor and Olav to join her. While the latter elected to remain in Vinland, Eivor joined Hilde on the voyage back home.[3]
