Abstergo Genetic Research Lab is a division of Abstergo Industries with a focus on genetic research through the use of their website WhyYou.[1] Their headquarters is located in Osaka, Japan.[2]

On the surface, the company's site allowed users to perform a genealogical DNA test in order to tract their genetic profile and ethnicity. In reality, the tool was used by Abstergo, the front of the Templar Order in the 21st century, to track down individuals who have possible Assassin ancestry.[1]

History

In 2023, Noa Kim, a Korean-American descendant of the British Assassin Edward Kenway, used WhyYou which revealed his ethnicity and ancestry to Abstergo. Seeking to uncover the late Assassin's activities in Southeast Asia, the Research Lab lured Noa to Macau on the pretense of a vacation prize for using the site. After kidnapping Noa,[1] they brought him to Abstergo's research vessel, the Exitus,[3] where the young man was forced to relive Edward's memories in the Animus.[1]

Later that year, the Templar turncoat Shimazu Sei was captured by Sigma Team alongside a crescent amulet, a Piece of Eden which was part of a set alongside two other artifacts.[4] While Abstergo's engineering team worked on a device to replicate the powers of the second artifact, Sei was brought to the Research Lab's headquarters in Osaka and strapped to an Animus, being forced to relive the memories of her ancestor Shimazu Saito. This informed Abstergo of the third artifact's location within Saito's grave, whereupon Sigma Team was dispatched to recover it.[2]

Meanwhile, Noa learned about Sei's predicament thanks to the hacker group DedSec, who breached Abstergo's internal network, and resolved to save her. With the help of DedSec and a group of Assassins, Noa infiltrated the Research Lab's headquarters and freed Sei from the Animus, though she suffered from a severe case of the Bleeding Effect and believed herself to be Saito.[2]
