The Winter Palace was a palace in Anbar, serving as a residence for the Abbasid caliphs before Baghdad was founded as the empire's new capital.

In 861, the caliph Al-Mutawakkil arrived at the palace with his envoy to meet with the Order of the Ancients. That night, Al-Mutawakkil presented a large chest containing an artifact which he had been asked to find. Once the Order had confirmed his find, they reminded Al-Mutawakki to keep in line and not to ever look inside the chest for his own sake before leaving. That same night, the thief Basim Ibn Ishaq and his friend Nehal infiltrated the palace to recover the artifact for the Hidden Ones. After being spotted by the caliph, Basim accidentally killed him with a dagger in self-defense and fled the palace with the artifact, while Al-Mutawakkil's son Abu 'Abdallah called for the Caliphate guards to chase after him.[1]
