Wanating
Wanating is a city in Oxfordshire, England.
History
In the late 9th century, the city was visited by the Viking Geirmund Hel-hide and his company during their march to divert Alfred the Great's attention from Guthrum's army. Having learned it was the birthplace of Alfred, the Hel-hides made for the city, finding an empty fortress where they stayed the night in. Alfred and his Saxons marched during the night to reach them and they besieged the Vikings for a while before leaving heading west.[1] The Hel-hides were confused, but later learned the Saxons had left to engage the army of Ubba Ragnarsson in battle. Geirmund soon burnt his fallen warriors, including Thorgrim, and left Wanating aflame.[2]
