Tewdwr was the ealdorman of Glowecestrescire in the late 9th century, succeeding Cynon. He was inexperienced and easily misled by the agendas of others, having meant to enter the service of the church instead of becoming a leader.[1]
Biography
Not much is known about his past, except on the matters of his religious upbringing of being a devout Christian. However, it was noted that he may have strayed from his religious ways in an unknown circumstance.[2]
When the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan arrived in Glowecestre to meet and bring back the lovers, Brigid and Ravensthorpe's blacksmith Gunnar back home, she was given a tour by Gunnar. Gunnar introduced Eivor to the Samhain festival and its planners, the current ealdorman, Cynon, and his successor, Tewdwr. Upon their initial interaction, Tewdwr offended Eivor's presence, due to having too many Danes in the city. Breaking the tension between them, Gunnar spoke of apples and the cider. Cynon joined the conversation and told Tewdwr to ease up. Tewdwr remarked that he had to pray to Saint Kenhelm outside the city. Cynon heard this and coded that he might need an escort, which Eivor agreed to do. Reluctant, Tewdwr was escorted by Eivor to his praying grounds at St. Kenhelm's Falls.[2]
Discussing the ways of how they differ on their prayers, Eivor wondered why Tewdwr dirtied his knees until she heard a sound. In disbelief, Tewdwr looked around unconvinced until they both saw a trio of wild boars ready to attack. However, Eivor protected Tewdwr and killed the boars. Tewdwr, relieved, thanked Eivor and promised to tell Cynon that she did her job as an escort. Afterwards, Eivor engaged in the disguise of the Mari Lwyd collecting cakes, but soon was in a fight with a heckler. Fighting alongside Eivor, Gunnar was injured. Luckily, Modron came in and proclaimed to aid Gunnar, who stated to Eivor to ease tensions with Tewdwr. Eivor left and found Tewdwr outside the main hall of Glowecestre, next to Gwilim.[2]
After a drinking game between Eivor and Tewdwr, both of them joined Cynon and Gwilim. All four discussed how the festival was the last task for Cynon, who stated that he is to be sacrificed for years of good harvest. Tewdwr was stated to be the next ealdorman, but reluctant at Cynon's sendoff. Nevertheless, all four toasted and then Cynon had to leave to tend to other matters. Later, Tewdwr and Eivor talked and Tewdwr apologized to Eivor of his initial remarks and attitude. Eivor forgave him and they drank the night away. Gwilim even gave both Eivor and Tewdwr something strong, as per their orders. Throughout the night, Tewdwr and Eivor acted silly, such as chasing chickens and being chased by them. At the end, both Tewdwr and Eivor fell unconscious near Tewdwr's house.[2]
The next day, Eivor woke up in horrow, with Tewdwr missing, his guard stabbed to death, and Gwilim's pouch within his house. Exiting after her investigation, Cynon accused Eivor of Tewdwr's murder, which led Eivor being wanted for murder. To clear her name, Eivor asked Modron for help, using Gwilim's pouch as her clue. From Modron and Gwenydd, Eivor left to meet a druid named Halewyn for his help.[3]
Eivor met with Modron at Rollendritch to discuss where "Cudd Lladron" is. Modron stated that the name was a Welsh translation for Thieves' Warren and promised to lead Eivor there. At Thieves' Warren, Eivor investigated the area and heard Tewdwr's voice, which meant that he was still alive. Finding her way inside the hut that kept him, Eivor saw Gwilim standing over him and interrogated him. Gwilim stated that Tewdwr was to die by Cynon's orders, but that he was kept alive for ransom and the good company. Tewdwr stood up in disbelief of Cynon's betrayal, but only to fall down due to his injuries. Pushing Gwilim out of the way, Eivor carried Tewdwr out of the bandit stronghold. Tewdwr softly stated his change of heart and that he would act as a leader to all of his people, regardless of their religion.[4]
Bringing an unconscious Tewdwr to Modron, Eivor decided that she needed to confront Cynon as Modron was to tend Tewdwr's injuries. Back in Glowecestre, Eivor discovered that Cynon was in St. Kenhelm's Church and find her way inside the guarded church. Probing the church inside, Eivor found and confronted Cynon on his crimes. Cynon stated that Tewdwr's admission against pagans would destroy his work of the union between pagans and Christians and threaten his legacy, especially his child, Gwenydd. Cynon also stated that Modron, who has Tewdwr, planned it all. Eivor revealed, though, that Tewdwr recanted his previous statements and that Cynon's plan worked in convincing him. In shock, Cynon revealed Tewdwr's location to be at Modron's forest temple at Aelfwood. After deciding Cynon's fate, Eivor left to save Tewdwr.[5]
Probing the area, Eivor found a hidden entrance at Aelfwood that led to the Ochre Caves. Sleuthing through its poisonous gases and Modron's guards, Eivor found Modron's lair, where she saw Modron with a knife about to sacrifice Tewdwr. Stopping Modron, Eivor accused Modron and threatened her, which led to Modron starting a battle between her and Eivor. Eivor proved victorous and decided Modron's fate, unknown to Gwenydd's presence. Tewdwr woke up as Eivor told him of all that happened. Thus, Eivor and Tewdwr left the caves and went back to Glowecestre for the festival's end.[6]
Later, commencing the burning ceremony, Tewdwr promised to keep an alliance with Eivor and her Raven Clan. Tewdwr also promised to keep his word on being ealdorman to all. Tewdwr gave Eivor the honor of lighting the Wicker Man, which led to all of Glowecestre watching the Samhain festival end.[7]
