Syrinx was a nymph and a follower of the goddess Artemis in Greek mythology.

In various stories, Syrinx met Pan, the god of the wild who fell in love with her. Rejecting his love for her, Syrinx ran to a river's edge and asked for assistance from the river nymphs. In return, she was transformed into hollow water reeds which produced a haunting sound.[1] Pan then went on to create a flute fashioned from the reeds, naming it after her.[2]
