Spring of Peirene

The Spring of Peirene was a spring located east of the Temple of Aphrodite on the Akrokorinth in Korinthia, Greece.

History

Mythology

In Greek mythology, the spring was the favorite watering-hole of the winged horse, Pegasos. Once when he came to drink, he was captured by Bellerophon, the son of Korinth's King Glaukos.

Peloponnesian War

When the hetaerae fled Korinth for fear of The Monger, they used the Spring of Peirene as a meeting place.

During the Peloponnesian War, the spring was visited by the Spartan misthios Kassandra.

Trivia

• The Spring as well as the fountain in Korinth are both named after the nymph Peirene.
