Shang Commandery (上郡; Mandarin: Shàngjùn lit. 'Upper Commandery') was a commandery of the Qin dynasty of China, corresponding to the present-day eastern part of Shanxi province.[1] As with other commanderies (郡; jùn), Shang Commandery originated as a military district the Qin established as a new form of local government to dismantle the old city-states.[2] During the reign of Qin Shi Huang, the region was roughly bisected by the newly constructed Great Wall into Northern Shangjun and Southern Shangjun.[3]
