Sakamoto (坂本) is a port town that was formerly part of Omi Province during the late 16th century.[1]. Today, the town is part of Ōtsu, which serves as the capital city of Shiga Prefecture.[2] Sakamoto was known for the Sakamoto Castle, built by Akechi Mitsuhide following the Siege of Mount Hiei in 1571.[3]

In 1582, the group consisting of Fujibayashi Naoe, Yasuke, Shōtei and Rokkaku Katsuhime led a mission on the town with the two primary objectives: to eliminate Akechi Kagemitsu's bodyguard Gamo Yoshimitsu, and eliminate Kagemitsu himself.[4]
