John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury
John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury (c. 1387 – 17 July 1453) was an English noble and a military commander during the Hundred Years' War. He was one of the leaders in the Siege of Orléans.
Biography
On 22 March 1429, Jeanne d'Arc dictated a letter ordering many English leaders, including Talbot and King Henry VI, to surrender to her by the will of God.[1] On 8 May of the same year, Talbot ordered his men to line up in a battle formation but not attack, a maneuvre that was met in kind by the French soldiers the sought to break the siege of Orléans. After a while, Talbot broke from the formation, moving forward, being matched by Jeanne. Talbot slowly but deliberately unsheathed his sword but did not lift it. Jeanne did the same with her sword, the blade blazing as if she held a small sun. Talbot watched her for several long minutes before nodding, sheathing his sword and leading the English away from the battlefield.[2]
On June[3] 1429, Talbot retreated to Patay, but was chased by Jeanne and eventually imprisoned by the French.[4]
