Isle of Ely
The Isle of Ely is a historical region located in Cambridgeshire, England. Its name has been said to be translated to the "island of eels" and was considered an island until the 17th century.[1]
History
Medieval period
In 652, Princess Æthelthryth was gifted the island through her marriage with Prince Tondbert.[1] Afterwards, Æthelthryth became the founder and first Abbess of its monastery.[2] In 870, the isle's monastery was raided by the Great Heathen Army, with accounts of a priest named Ealric fleeing with the monastery's most important relic.[3] Around 873, the isle became part of the battleground between the Vikings jarlskona Soma and her ally, the shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan against the Saxon earl and Order Palatinus Wigmund. Their last confrontation came to a head at the Isle of Ely Monastery, where Soma, Eivor, and their forces fought against Wigmund's soldiers. The Vikings defeated Wigmund's men as Eivor assassinated Wigmund swiftly.[4]
