Gwilim
Gwilim was a bandit that operated at Thieves' Warren, in 9th century Glowecestrescire, England.
Biography
Not much is known about Gwilim, however Gwilim was hired to masquerade as a fellow monk under the plan to get rid of Tewdwr as successor to the shire's ealdorman, Cynon.[1]
A Tale of Wicker-Fire
Gwilim appeared under the guise of a fellow Christian monk and joined in the festivities along Cynon, Tewdwr, and Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir. After Cynon left the group, Eivor and Tewdwr were left to talk as Tewdwr began apologizing for his blunt insults from earlier. While they were conversing and drinking, Gwilim gave both Eivor and Tewdwr a stronger drink within their discussion. From this drink, Eivor and Tewdwr became woozy and uncoordinated. After a while, Tewdwr and Eivor dropped unconscious at Tewdwr's cottage.[2]
Eivor woke up to see a mess within the house and Tewdwr's guard deceased. Despite being hungover, Eivor investigated and found Gwilim's pouch at the crime scene. Eivor deduced that Gwilim was present and Tewdwr's disappearance might be Gwilim's doing. Upon leaving, Eivor was confronted by Cynon, who accused her of killing Tewdwr. As a wanted person, Eivor escaped their persecution and found Modron to help her. Giving Modron Gwilim's pouch, Eivor was told that the pouch contained ingredients needed for a deep sleep. With the advice of her daughter, Gwenydd, Modron told Eivor to seek out Halewyn for more information on Gwilim's pouch.[3]
Arriving at Druid's Cottage, Eivor, masked as the Mari Lwyd, knocked on his door for help on Gwilim's pouch. Answering the door and believing Eivor to be a "light spirit", Halewyn made Eivor to do tasks for him and then answer riddles for him. Eivor successfully proved herself to be a light spirit and then asked Halewyn to identify anything about Gwilim's pouch. Halewyn stated that the man needed help sleeping and that his location was named "Cudd Lladron." Having what she needed, Eivor left to meet Modron at Rollendritch to discuss Gwilim's pouch.[3]
After meeting and discussing with Modron about Halewyn's information, Eivor was told that Cudd Lladron is the Welsh name for Thieves' Warren. Modron decided to lead the way for Eivor and promised to be outside the area when Eivor found what she can. During her probe of the bandit stronghold, Eivor overheard Tewdwr's voice and confirmed his survival. As she found and entered the hut where the voice came from, Eivor saw Gwilim standing over Tewdwr and two other prisoners.[1]
Under Eivor's threat, Gwilim admitted to being to be hired to drug and kill Tewdwr under Cynon's orders. Still unconvinced, Eivor asked why Tewdwr was still alive. Gwilim disclosed to keep Tewdwr alive for more ransom money but ultimately stated that Tewdwr was good company. Meanwhile, Tewdwr, in disbelief, stood and wondered why until falling down unconscious. Seeing Tewdwr still injured, Eivor pushed Gwilim out of the way and carried Tewdwr out of the stronghold.[1]
