Galwyna was an Anglo-Saxon woman who lived in Lincoln during the 9th century. One of the frequent guests of Ealdorman Hundbeorht, Galwyna happened to be a woman of the cloth and a healer for the ealdorman.
Biography
Little is known about her past, though Galwyna was inferred to be present as one of the guests at Hunwald's home, visiting Hunwald's father. In fact, she was present when the ealdorman was taken someplace else from his home.[1]
In 875, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan went to search for the missing ealdorman. After searching the city of Lincoln and its sewers, Eivor deduced that Hundbeorht was taken to Bolingbroc Castle, after surviving from a bandit ambush. Eivor arrived and sleuthed her way through the castle and its defenses, and found an underground passage. While going down the passage, Eivor heard a woman speaking with herself, proclaming to be both herself and the ealdorman. Upon discovery, Eivor saw that it was a woman, Galwyna, standing besides a decomposing ealdorman. Galwyna introduced herself at Eivor's arrival and admitted to being Hundbeorht's caretaker, even after his death. Wondering how Galwyna got here, Eivor asked her why she has not told anyone. Galwyna stated that she was told to take care of the ealdorman in secret and that when she asked who ordered this, she was struck in response. [2]
Wanting proof for Hunwald, Eivor looked around the underground area as Galwyna gave no opposition to Eivor's search. After finding how Galwyna took care of Hundbeorht in his final moments and thereafter, Eivor found a trinket and left Galwyna with the ealdorman's corpse. As she left, Eivor heard Galwyna praying for Hundbeorht's soul and promising him to be laid to rest next to his family line, the Kingdom of Lindsey.[2]
