"Caution's nothing without charisma. If a man plays the fool, then it's only fools he'll persuade. But appear to be the devil... and all men will submit."
―Edward Thatch to Edward Kenway.[src]

Edward Thatch (c. 1680 – 1718), also known as Edward Teach, or by the alias Blackbeard, was an infamous English pirate captain who sailed the West Indies and the eastern seaboard of the American colonies during the early 18th century, aboard the ship Queen Anne's Revenge.

Biography

Early Life

The man who would eventually become known as Blackbeard was most likely born in Bristol, England, in 1680. Little is known of his early years other than that he took to the sea with the Royal Navy as an enlisted man. After fighting in the War of Spanish Secession, Thatch left the navy for privateering, where he would meet Edward Kenway and Charles Vane. But when Britian and Spain finally made peace, Thatch, like his friends Kenway and Vane, turned to piracy to make his living. He started his life of crime under the leadership of Benjamin Hornigold

Piracy

Following the fall of the pirate republic of Nassau, Thatch felt his pirating days were over and retired to North Carolina. He was soon tracked down to a local beach by former associates Edward Kenway and Charles Vane, who both failed to convince him to return to the West Indies.

Later that evening, English pirate hunters stormed his beach with a Man O' War. Thatch and Kenway boarded the monstrous vessel from Kenway's Jackdaw, but despite their best efforts, Thatch was slain after a prolonged and bloody battle, though Kenway and Vane were able to escape.[1]
