Edward Thatch (c. 1680 – 1718), also known as Edward Teach, or by the alias Blackbeard, was an infamous English pirate captain who sailed the West Indies and the American Colonies during the early 18th century, aboard the ship Queen Anne's Revenge, and a contemporary and associate of Edward Kenway.
Biography
Following the fall of the pirate republic of Nassau, Thatch felt his pirating days were over, and retired to North Carolina. He was soon tracked down to a local beach by former associates Edward Kenway and Charles Vane, who both failed to convince him to return to the West Indies.
Later that evening, English pirate hunters stormed his beach with a Man O' War. Thatch and Kenway boarded the monstrous vessel from Kenway's Jackdaw, but despite their best efforts, Thatch was slain after a prolonged and bloody battle, though Kenway and Vane were able to escape.[1]
Trivia
- The database entry for Dead Chest Island in Assassin's Creed III uses the name "Edward Teach".[2]
- Following his retirement, Edward Kenway took an Irish bloodhound as a pet, which he named Thatch.[3]
- Despite his approximate date of birth being 1680, in the The Siege of Charles-Towne Thatch claimed that he was "late into my fourth decade on this planet, and plan to be living cozy an' safe by my fifth". This implied that his actual date of birth was closer to 1670.
