Burned Temple of Hera

The Burned Temple of Hera was a temple dedicated to Hera located within the Phaleron Sandy Bay, west of the Phaleron Sunken Harbor in Attika, Greece.

During the Greco-Persian Wars the temple was burned down by the Persian general Mardonius. After the war, rather than rebuilding the temple, Athenians replaced the statue of the goddess instead.[1]

By the Peloponnesian War the temple ruins had been claimed by a group of Followers of Ares. The Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the ruins, eliminating the Followers and claiming their valuables.[1]
