Ulf (Norse)
Ulf was a Norseman who lived in Stavanger in the late 9th century.
Biography[edit | edit source]
In 866, one morning, Ulf thanked Thorsteinn Silvertongue for his wife Gunnhilda Gunnarsdottir's woolen cloak she sowed while they walked towards the market. However, he heard about Thorsteinn selling Bjorn a faulty sail and calling his honor into question. He, along with his other neighbors, soon listened when Thorsteinn showed evidence of Bjorn's lies. Ulf interjected and stated that the sail itself was not Gunnhilda's stitching at all, proving Thorsteinn's innocence. Ulf later attended the mannjafnadr between Thorsteinn and Bjorn at Harholl, which the former proved victorious. Ultimately, he called for a vote, which led to a unanimous vote for Bjorn's exile.[1]
In 870, Ulf also stood behind Thorsteinn and Gunnhilda's plan to settle in England and joined their crew.[2] However, within a year, the navigator Frode left them to join jarl Guthrum and his Great Summer Army. As a result, Ulf, along with others, left the crew, leaving the married couple without either a crew or a navigator.[3]
