St. John's wort

St. John's wort is a plant with yellow flowers of the family Hypericaceae.
History
5th century BCE
Known as hypereikon, an extract from the plant was believed to help with feverish contagion.[1]
18th century
During the American Revolutionary War for independence from the British Empire, St. John's wort was used as an ingredient for certain medicines, particularly a skin irritation remedy as well as an all-purpose remedy.[2]
19th century
During the 19th century, the Language of Flowers mentioned how the plant was believed to act as an apotropaic. For this belief of repelling phantoms and other "spirits of darkness", the plant was also known as Solterrestres, meaning the 'Terrestrial Sun'.[3] Evie Frye helped Henry Green fill up his herbarium in London in 1866, and St. John's wort was one of the flowers she gathered.[4]
