After being captured by the Caribbean Templars and placed on a treasure ship bound for Spain, Edward awoke to find himself in leg irons together with a fellow prisoner, Adéwalé.
Edward had a flashback to his early days of married life with Caroline Scott.
Emmett Scott threw a severely drunken Edward to the floor of the Kenways' single-level house. Edward knocked over a chair cackling and rolled on the planks, unaffected by the impacts. Standing above, Caroline watched him briefly then looked at her father.
Emmett:A despicable display! This tosspot is a ruined man, Caroline. Unfit for life on land, much less at sea. If he goes to the West Indies, it's you who'll suffer.
He stormed to the door.
Caroline:Father... Father!
Emmet wordlessly opened the door and exited, slamming it shut. Edward struggled to rise. Sadly reminded again of his alcoholism, Caroline went to help him.
Caroline:Come, love. Up with you now.
She righted the chair. Edward slowly rose and spoke with a slur, raising his voice in the direction of the door despite Emmett being long past hearing anything from inside.
Caroline directed him to the chair and spoke resignedly.
Caroline:I hope it's so.
Edward clasped her hands before she could walk away, desperately trying to convince her of his dreams.
Edward:You believe me, don't you? Can you not see me... standing out there on the deck of a ship that's sliding into port?
Carlone did not reply, instead withdrawing her hand from his grasp, reaching over to grab the alcohol bottle on the table, and silently walk away. Edward, lost in his delusion, took no notice and vacantly stared out the window.
Edward:And there I am, a man of quality.. with a thousand doubloons spilling from my pockets, like drops of rain. I can see it...
Caroline lay in bed asleep when a tipsy Edward entered the house. The creaking door and the sound of his steps to the bed woke her.
Edward:Ahoy, dove. How are you feeling?
He sat on the bed beside her as she rose to a sitting position.
He raised the tankard to Caroline's lips to help her take a sip.
Edward: You see, as a privateer, I'll find all manner of novelties in the New World.
He gestured with the tankard to emphasize his point, then playfully bumped her arm with his elbow. Caroline chuckled.
Edward:We'll be the talk of Bristol.
He against the headboard.
Edward:So, how's it feel to drink like a Duke?
Caroline laughed slightly awkwardly.
Caroline:Edward, my father is a merchant. I've had chocolate many times.
Disheartened at her unexpected lack of enthusiasm, Edward stared into the tankard.
Edward:Have you?
Realizing that she had accidentally insulted his gift without considering their class differences, Caroline tried to recover herself. She shifted closer beside him.
Caroline:Have...have you not?
Edward:No.
Caroline:Go on then.
She nodded and smiled, indicating for him to sample more of the drink. Edward gave a short snort of amusement and took a longer drink, expressing his satisfaction with the beverage.
Edward:It's nice.
He made to drink again but Caroline stopped his hands and brought them back to his lap. Perplexed, he looked at her.
Edward considered the idea and smiled in approval. Caroline leaned up against his side.
Caroline:Oh, thank you, love. This was so very thoughtful of you.
She kissed his arm and returned to sleep, unaware that Edward was still somewhat bothered by his gift not being a unique surprise.
Edward awoke from his thoughts to see a Spanish soldier toss a plate with a single hardtack biscuit between himself and the man he was locked beside in bilboes.
Soldier 1: La cena. Cómetela rápido. (Supper. Eat it fast.)
Uninterested in the food, Edward turned to address his fellow prisoner.
Edward:You hungry?
Adéwalé silently snorted in amusement and smiled. Nodding his head, agreeing to whatever Edward was planning. Edward grabbed his end of the metal bar, Adéwalé did likewise, and they shifted it back and forth to slam the lock on the far end against Adéwalé's right ankle binding. It soon shattered; they threaded the rod out and discarded it, finally free to stand.
Edward:Now what's your plan, mate?
Adéwalé:Find my weapon and steal a ship.
Soldier 2: Que Dios nos ayude. No me gusta la pinta de esa tormenta que se acerca. (God help us. I don't like the look of that storm coming.)
Soldier 3: Parece que se está desviando al peste, hacia el golfo. Quizá estemos a salvo. (It looks like it's veering west, into the gulf. We might be safe.)
Adéwalé:We're stealing a brig. Hey, take what you need!
Edward:Won't be a minute.
Edward found a leather vest among the confiscated possessions and used it to reinforce his robes.
Adéwalé:There's many prisoners held on these ships. Set them free, and they'll sail with us, no question.
Edward and Adéwalé made their way topside.
Edward:So that's the idea then? Free what men we can, then find a fast ship to flee in?
Adéwalé:Aye. There's a brig in this fleet. I'll make my way to it.
Edward saved the first group of prisoners.
Edward freeing the pirates
Edward:There's a catch to this favor. You're sailing with me.
Prisoner:I'd follow you to hell for this, mate!
Edward made his way to the next ship.
Soldier 5: ¿Qué nos está retrasando? ¡Ya deberíanis haber hecho la mitad de la ruta a las Bermudas! (What's the delay? We should be halfway to Bermuda by now.)
Soldier 6:Oro. Plata. Jade. Tabaco. Lo que se te ocurra. (Gold. Silver. Jade. Tobacco. You name it.)
Soldier 5: ¿Y agua qué? ¿O comida? ¡Me preocupa más mi estómago que las arcas del Rey! (What about water? What about food? I'm more worried about my stomach than the King's coffers.)
Edward attacked soldiers guarding more prisoners.
Soldier 7: ¡Los prisioneros hon escapado! (The prisoners have escaped!)
After killing the guards, Edward freed the captives.
Edward:Come on, lads! If we're to drown today, it won't be here!
Edward made his way to the next ship.
Soldier 8: ¡Preparaos para partir! ¡Casi tenemos encima la tormenta! (Make ready to leave! That storm's nearly upon us!)
Soldier 9: ¿Y qué pasa con los prisioneros? (What of the prisoners?)
Soldier 8: Que se ahoguen; ¡mejor ellos que nosotros! (Let them drown, else we all do!)
Edward saved another group.
Edward:There's a brig nearby just waiting for us to take her.
Edward made his way to the next ship, going below deck.
Soldier 10: Voy a ir a lo más alto. Esto es una locura. (I'm going on top. This is madness.)
Soldier 11: Cálmate. No pasará nada. En unos minutos partiremos. (Calm down. We'll be fine. We'll be under-weigh in a few minutes.)
Soldier 12: ¡Deja de retorcerte, pirata! ¿Me entiendes? ¡No te muevas! (Stop squirming about, pirate! You understand? No moving!)
Edward saved the last group of prisoners.
Edward:We're going topside. Be ready.
Edward then made his way towards the brig.
Soldier 13: ¡Debemos levar anclas! ¡Vamos! (We must weigh anchor! Now!) ¡Rápido! ¡Por el amor de Dios, moveos! (Hurry! For God's sake, move!) ¡Que Dios nos ampare! ¡Nos hará pedazos! (Jesus help us! We'll be dashed to pieces!)
Captain: ¡No vamos a ir a ninguna parte! Quedaos quietos y preparaos para lo peor, ¿está claro? (We're not going anywhere! Batten down the hatches and sit tight, you hear me?)
Soldier 13: ¿Quién está al mando aqui? (Who the hell is in charge here?!)
Edward swiftly killed the brig's captain.
Edward:Lay aboard, lads!
Adéwalé:Save your singing for Davy Jones, you jagabats! It's a hard wind coming!
Edward:The man speaks true! You lot weigh anchor. As for the rest, half on the foremast and half at the main! Let's outrun this hurricane!
Edward began his attempt to escape the hurricane.
Edward:Keep watch on those galleons! See they don't give us trouble.
Adéwalé:They won't. Far too slow for this weather.
Edward:Bark any orders you think wise, mate. We're up against it here!
Adéwalé:These men know their place. They'll see us home.
A rogue wave appeared.
Adéwalé:Look out man!
Edward:I see it!
Adéwalé:Waterspout! Steer clear of that thing! Waterspout, man! Steer wide! It's not looking good! Steady as she goes, man. We will be dragged down to our deaths, captain.
Edward introducing himself to Adéwalé
Edward and his crew managed to escape from the treasure fleet and the storm.
Crewman 1:Godfrey Lijah, we made it!
Crewman 2:Oh what a mess! Jaysus.
Edward:By God, we pulled this one straight from the teeth of Neptune... I'm Edward. Much thanks for your aid back there.
With the combined effort of the prisoners they released, Edward and Adéwalé managed to escape captivity and certain death with a stolen brig, which Edward decided to keep afterward.
The memory portrays the sinking of the 1715 Treasure Fleet, which was destroyed by a hurricane on 31 July and is among the worst losses of the fleet by natural disaster.
