Jade refers to a variety of largely green-hued minerals, often used as sculpting material.
History[edit | edit source]
Unknown[edit | edit source]
Both the Mayas and the Aztecs used jade as a decorative stone, which they carved into various shapes, or used as part of mosaics.[1]
In China, jade was considered to be a symbol of good fortune, the same as pigs.[1]
18th century[edit | edit source]
During the Golden Age of Piracy in the West Indies, jade was desired for its value by various people, including pirates and soldiers.[2] In search of carved jade, they were not above raiding Mayan temples, or offering rewards for it.[3]
19th century[edit | edit source]
During the Victorian era, jade was used occasionally in the crafting of weapons, namely in the blades of kukris and cane-swords.[4]
