Berkshire (Old English: Bearroscire) is a county in the South East of England. The River Thames forms the northern border of the country.[1]
History
Viking Age
The Battle of Ashdown was fought in Berkshire in 871. During the battle between the Great Heathen Army and the forces of King Athelred I of Wessex, jarl Osbern was killed.[2]
In 878, Alfred the Great gained command of the fyrd of Berkshire, and sent them to overlook the River Thames and the Icknield Way, as Alfred predicted that Guthrum's army would march from this direction towards the Battle of Chippenham.[3]
Victorian Era
In 1863, Broadmoor Asylum was opened, taking some patients from Bethlam Royal Hospital in the process.[4]
