Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians (died 911) was the ruler of Mercia following the death of King Ceolwulf II.[1] He married Lady Æthelflæd, becoming the son-in-law of Alfred the Great.[2]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Around 889, Alfred offered Æthelred's position as Lord of the Mercians to jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan. However, she turned it down, allowing Æthelred to keep his title.[3]

After a new wave of Vikings from continental Europe landed at Kent during the early 890s, Æthelred and his brother-in-law Edward the Elder pushed them back. In 893, Æthelred's army fought a Viking force led by Hastein in the Battle of Buttington and forced them to flee into Essex.[2]
