Balor was a figure in Irish mythology, usually depicted as the leader of the Fomorians and a giant with a large eye that wreaks destruction when opened. Interpreted as a personification of the scorching sun, Balor is primarily known for the tale in which he was killed by his grandson Lug of the Tuatha Dé Danann.
Through a concoction made by Deirdre Na Linni using amber shards collected from the deceased members of the Children of Danu, the shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir encountered and defeated Balor which allowed her to claim the legendary Gae Bolg spear.[1]
