"But study Hesiod and you'll learn to grow things out of it."
―Kassandra to Arion, 420s BCE.[src]-[m]

Hesiod (Ἡσίοδος, fl. 700 BCE) was a Greek poet who lived in 8th century Boeotia and is believed to have been a contemporary of Homer.[1] He is primarily famous for his works Theogony (c. 730 BCE), which he claimed was inspired by meeting the Muses[2] and detailed the Greek gods' origins, such as attesting that Eros was a primordial god who emanated from Chaos,[3] and Works and Days (c. 700 BCE), which detailed numerous agriculturally relevant things, such as how long to dry grapes to maximize a wine's sweetness.[4]

Hesiod was one of many Greek writers who commonly mentioned honey in his works,[5] and is regarded as the first western poet who saw himself as directly participating in the stories he told through self-insertion.[1]
