Revenge
The Revenge[1] was a sloop-of-war owned by the up-and-coming pirate Stede Bonnet during the early 18th century.
History
Merchant ship
The Revenge was originally a merchant schooner, used to transport crates of sugar from Bonnet's plantation in Barbados to Havana, Cuba.[2] In 1715, following an engagement between a British warship and pirates off the coast of Cape Bonavista, the passing Revenge was forced ashore and its captain, Stede Bonnet, accused of piracy. Following Edward Kenway's timely rescue, the two departed for Havana. En route, Bonnet admired Kenway's adventurous life and began his dreams of being a sailor.[3]
Pirate ship
Three years later, in 1718, Stede took the Revenge out to open sea to fulfill his dream of becoming a pirate. The crew foolishly chose a Spanish Man O' War as the target, and during the attack, nearly half of Bonnet's crew were killed or injured. To repair the ship and to get more crew members, Bonnet sailed to the pirate haven of Nassau and befriended the notorious Edward Thatch. The Revenge became part of Thatch's fleet, and Bonnet and his crew served on Thatch's flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge.[2]
In May 1718, Thatch cut his ties with Bonnet and offered him the Revenge back. After sailing away from Thatch, Bonnet bid a final farewell to his friend and fellow pirate, Edward Kenway.[4] Feeling confident that he had learned from Thatch, Bonnet decided to obtain a letter of marque from the governor of Saint Thomas and go privateering against Spanish ships. However, the hurricane season left the Revenge trapped in the Thirteen Colonies, and the restless crew decided to go back to piracy.[2]
In September 1718,[1] the Revenge attacked Royal Navy ships near Cape Fear River in North Carolina but were soundly defeated again. When Bonnet tried to escape in the Revenge, he was captured by the British forces and was soon hanged for piracy.[2]
It is unknown what happened to the Revenge after Stede Bonnet's death, but his friend Edward Kenway recovered its sails and figurehead and Bonnet's robes on the island of Santa Lucia.[5]
Behind the scenes
The Revenge is one of only four ships in the 2013 video game Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag that Edward Kenway temporarily pilots aside from the Jackdaw; the others are the Queen Anne's Revenge, the Jacobite, and the Nosso Senhor da Compreensão.
In Stede's database entry, Abstergo Entertainment staff misidentify his ship as a schooner,[2] which has a shorter foremast than mainmast,[6] instead of the two-masted sloops typical of the early 18th century.[7]
