Abe no Nakamaro (阿倍 仲麻呂; c. 698 – c. 770), also known by his adopted Chinese name Chao Heng (晁衡),[1] was a Japanese scholar and poet who served as an envoy to the Tang dynasty and subsequently governor of the province of Annam. A friend of the Chinese poet Li Bai and monk Jianzhen, he went to China in search of the Pieces of Eden.
