Abe no Nakamaro (Japanese/Chinese: 阿倍 仲麻呂; Hiragana: あべ の なかまろ; c. 698 – c. 770), Chinese name Chao Heng (Chinese: 晁衡),[1] was a scholar and poet who served as an envoy to the Tang dynasty and subsequently governor of the province of Annam. A friend of the Chinese poet Li Bai and monk Jianzhen, he went to China in search of the Pieces of Eden.
