A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing is a memory in Assassins Creed: Brotherhood located in the Vaticano District of Roma.
Description
Ezio Auditore traveled to the Vaticano District to uncover the conspiracy surrounding the Followers of Romulus and to continue his search for the shrines to Romulus. Upon arriving, Ezio made his way towards the Basilica di San Pietro, entering through a secret passage located outside the pavilion.
Upon entering the Basilica, Ezio watched over the conclusion of Mass. As soon as the prayers ended and the populace began to disperse, the Assassin used his Eagle vision to locate a corrupt, Borgia-allied cardinal.
Weaving between the crowds, Ezio tailed his target, overhearing conversations of his actions in Rome. Following the man to a corridor alongside the main hall, Ezio witnessed a meeting between false Followers of Romulus and the corrupt cardinal. The Followers left, having handed the cardinal a key.
Ezio slipped into the corridor and confronted the man, resulting in a chase across the entirety of the Basilica. The chase concluded as Ezio cornered the cardinal in a room atop San Pietro. A brief altercation ensued, resulting in the death of the cardinal at the hands of the Assassin.
Searching his body, Ezio retrieved the key and performed a Leap of faith from the tower, entering the shrine to Romulus below. He claimed a scroll and another one of the six keys to the treasure of Romulus, before returning to Rome.
Dialogue
Ezio entered the Basilica during the conclusion of Mass.
- Mass Giver: Benedìcat vos omnipotens Deus, Pater, et Filius, et Spìritus Sanctus, Amen. Ita, missa est. Deo gràtias.
Ezio moved into the crowd and began to blend amongst the cardinals, overhearing their conversations. He eventually located the Borgia-allied cardinal and tailed him.
- Cardinal #1: Did you hear? The Baron de Valois is dead. Now Bartolomeo d'Alviano will surely rise up against the Pope.
- Cardinal #2: Cesare's campaign will be in trouble.
- Cardinal #1: Is that such a bad thing?
- Cardinal #2: Perhaps not.
- Cardinal #3: Some say the Papal funds lie in disarray.
- Cardinal #4: Sul serio? (Seriously?) His Holiness will simply kill another wealthy cardinal if he requires funds.
- Cardinal #3: Disgusting.
- Cardinal #5: His name is Ezio Auditore.
- Cardinal #6: Who?
- Cardinal #5: The Assassin. He killed the Banker. Some say he walks the halls of Il Vaticano with no one able to stop him.
- Cardinal #6: Perhaps Cesare's rule will come to an end, and the Church will be restored to its former glory.
The cardinal being followed by Ezio met with two supposed Followers of Romulus.
- Borgia cardinal: I will write the sermons, then leave them for you within the shrine. Make sure you deliver them convincingly... with passion.
- Follower of Romulus: The followers will do anything we tell them to, padrone (master). They believe their god commands them.
- Borgia cardinal: Bene. (Good.) Do you have the key?
- Follower of Romulus: Yes, padrone (master).
The Follower handed over the key to his master.
- Borgia cardinal: May the Lord be with you.
- Follower of Romulus: And also with you, padrone (master).
The Followers left, and Ezio moved forward to confront the cardinal.
- Borgia cardinal: Assassino! (Assassin!) You will not get me!
The cardinal used a lift to ascend a tower.
- Borgia cardinal: My ascension takes me closer to God, and away from you, Assassino (Assassin)!
After a brief chase outside, the cardinal re-entered the Basilica, closing the door on Ezio.
- Borgia cardinal: Sanctuary denied!
While chasing the cardinal, the swing mechanism Ezio was using breaks, slamming him down to a lower platform.
- Borgia cardinal: It seems God is on my side, Assassino (Assassin)!
Ezio resumed his chase of the cardinal across the scaffolding in the Basilica.
- Borgia cardinal: What do you want, Assassino (Assassin)?
- Ezio: The Followers of Romulus work for the Pope's gain.
- Borgia cardinal: Of course. They are ignorant. We are enlightened. Their savagery will lead the people to the light of the Church.
Ezio cornered the cardinal in the Basilica's tower.
- Ezio: You have nowhere to run.
- Borgia cardinal: What a fool. You wage war against the very instrument that prevents the people from overthrowing order.
- Ezio: Your order is no order at all!
Ezio killed the cardinal, and laid him to rest.
- Ezio: Requiescat in pace. (Rest in peace.)
Outcome
Ezio killed the cardinal and obtained his key, granting him access to the shrine to Romulus. He claimed a scroll of Romulus and one of the six keys required to unlock the treasure of Romulus.
Trivia
- To get 100% synchronization, the player must finish the memory within eight minutes.
- There are three flags that may be found in this Secret Location.
- There is an alternate cutscene if Ezio throws the cardinal over the side of the rail. As he falls, Ezio grabs onto the key around his neck and he says: "You saved me! Praise God!" before Ezio forcefully pulls the key, making the rope break and letting the cardinal fall to his death.
- While exploring the Lair of Romulus, it is raining outside. This is the only time the weather changes in the Assassin's Creed series.
- The talk between the two cardinals about Ezio "walking the halls of Il Vaticano" is quite ironic, as he is blending amongst them during a mass, and he clearly stands out from cardinals' red, wide hats with his hood.
- It is possible to bypass the beginning of the chase sequence and freely explore the Basilica. After the cutscene in which the cardinal speaks with the Followers, go back out to the middle of the crowd. A group of cardinals (also including a bishop) repeatedly walks a path around the pulpit and pews; when they pass close to the rest of the cardinals, blend with them, and they will eventually take you behind the pulpit, where the guards cannot see you. Once there, you may climb the altar, jump to the scaffolding, and drop into the area where the cardinal is. From here, you can follow the route taken in the chase sequence.
- The title of this mission is a clever pun. Cardinals are looked up to as shepherds of the Catholic Church, the Followers of Romulus have wolf-like habits, and the cardinal that Ezio faces is secretly affiliated with the Followers, literally making the cardinal a "wolf in sheep's clothing."
- When Ezio goes through the entrance of the lair, two drunk men are sitting next to the stairs of the courtyard, and one of them says: "Hey! Did you see that white knight?" while the other just produces a strange sound as a reaction. When Ezio is coming out of the lair, the men are still sitting there, and the same man says: "Hey, there's the white knight again." This time, the other man makes no respone.
