Wareham

Wareham is a city in the county of Dorset, England. Historically, the city was known as Werham and was part of the county of Hamtunscire during the Early medieval period.

History

In the late 9th century, the Viking jarl Guthrum planned to take Wareham to help with taking Wessex, it being both a port town, allowing their ships to drop off the Vikings stationed at Northumbria and other distant locations, and close to King Alfred's throne in Winchester. In order to not be discovered as they marched to Wareham, he called upon the Hel-hides to draw attention away from the bigger army.[1] Thanks to their efforts, Guthrum easily conquered Wareham, but Alfred came with an army shortly after and they negotiated peace, before the shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan and Guthrum broke the treaty and burned Wareham down.[2]
