Wanating is a city in Oxfordshire, England.
History
In the late 9th century, the Viking Geirmund Hjörrsson and his company of Hel-hides visited the city during their march to divert Alfred the Great's attention from Guthrum's army. Having learned it was the birthplace of Alfred, the Hel-hides made for the city, only to find an empty fortress in which they pitched camp for the night. Alfred and his Saxons marched through the night to reach them and they besieged the Vikings for a few days before abruptly leaving and heading west.[1] The Hel-hides were confused, but later learned the Saxons had left to engage[2] Ubba Ragnarsson's forces in battle[3] near the River Avon.[2] Geirmund soon cremated his fallen warriors, including Thorgrim, and left Wanating aflame.[3]
